Governor Greg Abbott has announced that more than $10.9 million in Fund for Veterans’ Assistance (FVA) grants have been awarded to 37 organizations serving the North Texas and Dallas-Fort Worth area. The funding, administered by the Texas Veterans Commission (TVC), will support services for over 4,500 veterans and their families across 32 counties.
“Texas is grateful for the brave men and women who selflessly served our country in the greatest military in the world,” said Governor Abbott. “The more than $10.9 million in grant funding will provide significant support and services to our veterans and their families in North Texas and Dallas-Fort Worth, including clinical counseling, service dog programs, and financial assistance. Texas will always support those who bravely put their lives on the line to defend our nation and our freedom.”
TVC Commission Secretary Chuck Wright, a Marine veteran, expressed appreciation for the work of local organizations. “I want to sincerely thank each of our award recipients for serving our veterans,” said Wright. “Your organizations are recognized for making a difference in the lives of those who served. The North Texas and DFW area has a strong military community, and it is home to many veterans. It’s great seeing the community give back to those who served.”
Wright presented the grants at Denton County Courthouse. Recipients include groups such as Adaptive Training Foundation, Baylor Research Institute, Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star, Boulder Crest Foundation, Canine Companions for Independence, several city governments, county agencies, Meals on Wheels chapters, Patriot PAWS Service Dogs, United Way chapters, and others providing a range of services from clinical counseling to housing support.
Earlier this year in May, Governor Abbott announced a statewide distribution of $46.3 million through over 200 grants benefitting 175 organizations throughout Texas. This round of funding is expected to deliver direct services to nearly 40,000 veterans along with their dependents and surviving spouses.
Since its inception in 2009 through the current grant cycle (2025-2026), more than $359 million has been distributed via over 1,600 FVA grants across Texas.
The TVC awards grants under five categories: General Assistance; Housing for Texas Heroes; Veterans Mental Health Grants; Veterans Treatment Courts; and Veteran County Service Officers. These funds help cover emergency financial needs as well as transportation assistance, legal aid, family support services, home modification projects, rental payments or mortgage relief.
Funding primarily comes from proceeds generated by special games offered by the Texas Lottery designated specifically for veteran support programs. Additional donations are accepted during vehicle registration or when purchasing hunting or fishing licenses.
