CapMetro has begun work on its Transit Plan 2035, which will guide the development of Central Texas’ transit network for the next five to ten years. The plan aims to improve bus, rail, and Pickup services. Recommendations are based on data analysis, coordination with stakeholders, and feedback from more than 8,000 community members who participated in a public survey last fall.
A key element of the plan is Austin’s first Light Rail project. CapMetro says that data indicates this addition will serve as an economic driver for the city and have a positive economic impact.
In the initial five years before Light Rail service begins, CapMetro plans to maintain existing services while making targeted changes intended to increase ridership. Planned improvements include new Rapid Routes 800 Pleasant Valley and 837 Expo Center. Once Light Rail opens, CapMetro intends to focus on further adjustments and future growth in its bus network.
The final phase of Transit Plan 2035 looks beyond the launch of Light Rail and into developments after 2035. This stage addresses regional transit system expansion and any Project Connect initiatives not implemented earlier.
Community members are invited to participate in upcoming open houses about Transit Plan 2035—one virtual session on August 26th and another in person at 2910 E 5th Street in Austin on August 28th. Registration details are available at capmetro.org/transitplan2035. Those unable to attend can provide feedback or sign up for updates through the website.
CapMetro’s Community Engagement team is also developing additional programs and opportunities for residents to get involved in shaping local transit policy; information is available at capmetro.org/community-engagement.
“Not only is Austin’s first Light Rail an exciting new development for the transit system but data has also shown it will be an economic engine for the city and result in an overwhelmingly positive economic impact.”
