The U.S. Census Bureau has announced that the 2020-2024 American Community Survey (ACS) 5-year estimates will be available to embargo subscribers starting January 27 at 10 a.m. Eastern Time, with public release scheduled for January 29.

The ACS collects data on various aspects of the nation’s population and housing, including topics such as language spoken at home, education, commuting patterns, employment status, mortgage and rent details, income levels, poverty rates, and health insurance coverage. The survey is noted as the only source providing local estimates for most of its more than 40 covered topics.

According to the Census Bureau, “The statistics will be available to embargo subscribers beginning Jan. 27 at 10 a.m. ET for a variety of geographic areas, including all states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, congressional and state legislative districts, metropolitan and micropolitan statistical areas, counties, places, and other geographies down to census tracts and block groups.”

Embargo subscribers will have access to these data from January 27 at 10 a.m. ET until January 29 at 12:01 a.m. ET. The Census Bureau emphasizes that wire services and distribution platforms are not allowed to share news stories or data files before the end of the embargo period. Further details about this policy can be found in the Census Bureau’s embargo policy.

Once released publicly on January 29 by 10 a.m. ET, all related data products—including those on data.census.gov as well as through APIs and summary files—will become accessible.

Those interested in gaining embargo access can register through www.census.gov/newsroom/releases/archives/embargoed_releases.
