The U.S. Census Bureau has released updated Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (TIGER)/Line files in several formats, including Shapefile, Geodatabase, and GeoPackage. These updates for 2025 provide users with the ability to create custom thematic maps from a range of data sources.
Among the new features are Current Suffixed Blocks Geodatabases and GeoPackages. These products include information on both 2020 and current census blocks, with suffixes that show where blocks have been split since 2020. The new geospatial data can be linked to the Census Bureau’s current address count listing files.
According to the Census Bureau, “Geospatial data contain, but are not limited to, legal, administrative, and statistical boundaries, roads and hydrography. The geographic boundary data can be linked to future 2025 vintage demographic data on data.census.gov, allowing users to visualize census tabular data on a map.”
While TIGER/Line files do not come with demographic data included, they do have geographic entity codes (GEOIDs) that allow users to link these boundaries to demographic datasets produced by the Census Bureau. For those seeking guidance on which product is best suited for their needs, additional information is available through the TIGER Data Products Guide page.
