Governor Greg Abbott has announced the official launch of the Texas Regulatory Efficiency Office (TREO), which will operate within the Office of the Governor. Alongside this, a new TREO website and Regulation Evaluation Portal have been introduced.
“The State of Texas operates at the speed of business, and this new Texas Regulatory Efficiency Office will ensure we continue to foster economic opportunity and protect individual liberty,” said Governor Abbott. “By cutting red tape and rooting out unnecessary regulations, we will make state government more responsive and more efficient to serve the people and job creators of Texas.”
The newly launched website is intended to be a central resource for updates on TREO’s activities focused on reducing regulatory burdens, eliminating unnecessary rules, and supporting economic growth by making Texas more favorable for businesses. Through the Regulation Evaluation Portal available on the site, residents can provide feedback or suggest areas where they believe there may be excessive government regulation that should be reviewed by TREO.
Earlier in October, Jerome Greener was appointed as Director of TREO by Governor Abbott.
The establishment of TREO follows legislation signed into law in April when Senate Bill 14 was enacted. This law requires TREO to assist state agencies in identifying and repealing rules that are no longer necessary or effective. It also tasks TREO with determining regulatory costs imposed on the public and issuing best-practice guidelines for agencies when adopting new rules or conducting required analyses such as cost and employment impact statements.
