Governor Greg Abbott encouraged Texas water entities on Apr. 14 to apply for more than $1 billion in grants available through the Texas Water Development Board’s Water Supply and Infrastructure Grant opportunity. The funding aims to improve the state’s water supply and update its water infrastructure.

The grant program is significant as it supports efforts to secure reliable water sources for Texans and address aging or insufficient infrastructure. “Water is a precious resource that must be safeguarded,” said Governor Abbott. “This year, Texas made monumental investments to further provide Texans with reliable water sources. I encourage eligible political subdivisions and water entities across the state to apply for funding through the Texas Water Development Board Water Supply and Infrastructure Grants to help secure Texas’ water future for generations to come.”

Last year, Abbott declared investment in water infrastructure an emergency item, which led to new laws supporting these improvements. Senate Bill 7 and House Joint Resolution 7 delivered what he called “the largest generational investment in Texas water infrastructure in history,” providing $20 billion for both new supply projects and repairs of existing systems.

House Bill 500 was also signed into law, allowing the board to provide full grant funding for eligible projects including system replacements, reuse efforts addressing apparent or real losses of water, or resolving violations from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

Applications are due by Thursday, July 30, 2026. Full details are available on the WSIG webpage. Webinars will be held April 23 and May 13 by TWDB for those interested in learning more about implementation.
