IAM District 6 members have increased their involvement in supporting homeless veterans by making the Des Moines Stand Down an official event for their District HELPS initiative. This year, locals across District 6 contributed funds, which were matched by the district, resulting in a total of $1,150 and additional donated supplies to support the effort. According to organizers, $750 is enough to provide 500 meals for those in need.
Thirteen members from three IAM Locals volunteered at the event, with some traveling over three hours to participate. Their responsibilities included registration, food service, security, cleanup, and water delivery for hundreds of volunteers on site. The event served more than 500 people—about half of whom were veterans and half civilians.
“Our veterans deserve more than gratitude, they deserve action,” said IAM Midwest Territory General Vice President Sam Cicinelli. “I’m proud of the IAM members in District 6 who stepped up to honor their service by ensuring they and their families receive the support they need.”
IAM members worked alongside other volunteers to make sure veterans and their families received care, meals, and essential services. District 6 has encouraged other IAM districts and locals to consider supporting Homeless Veterans Stand Down events in their own communities.
