IAM members from various industries gathered at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center to participate in the IAM Young Workers Program. The event was organized by Dee Colbert, Director of IAM Women’s and Young Workers, with the goal of helping young union members develop committees within their local unions.
The program lasted a week and focused on hands-on training and leadership development. Participants were introduced to different aspects of the union’s work through a curriculum that included topics such as IAM history, strategic planning, parliamentary procedure, generational diversity, public speaking, organizing around key issues, economics relevant to workers, human rights, and how to establish effective committees. Sessions were led by experienced educators and staff from IAM.
“This initiative is designed to engage and empower the next generation of union members by providing them with exposure to a wide range of departments, leaders, and opportunities within our movement,” said Colbert. “It is imperative that we give young workers meaningful experiences that deepen their understanding of union values and help shape their leadership mindset as they prepare for long, successful careers in the labor movement.”
During the program, participants worked in groups to create strategic plans for forming Young Worker Committees in their own local unions. One group presented its project as a podcast to demonstrate new ways for young members to use media tools for outreach.
The IAM Communications Department also provided training on effective messaging strategies. This session aimed to equip participants with communication skills necessary for engaging other members and supporting committee-building efforts when they return home.
Several senior IAM officials visited the center during the week. General Secretary-Treasurer Dora Cervantes spoke with attendees along with Bryan Pinette, Special Assistant to the General Secretary-Treasurer; and Richie Johnsen, Air Transport Territory General Vice President. They shared personal experiences from their time in the union and stressed how important it is for younger members to take active roles.
