Kroger is planning to expand its presence in North Texas with a $160 million investment in four new stores. The Cincinnati-based grocery chain has started construction on two locations in Fort Worth, with one at 113 East Bonds Ranch Road expected to open this fall and another at Sendera Ranch Boulevard and Rancho Canyon Way scheduled for a 2026 opening. These stores will serve customers in Haslet and southeast Wise County.

In addition to the Fort Worth sites, Kroger began building a store in Little Elm at U.S. Highway 380 and FM 2931 in April. Another location is set to break ground this fall in Anna at Rosamond Parkway and U.S. Highway 75. Each of the four stores will be over 120,000 square feet, with an estimated cost of about $40 million per store.

John Votava from Kroger stated that the new stores are expected to create approximately 1,200 jobs.

Kroger holds the position as the second-largest grocery chain in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, following Walmart. The company faces increased competition due to rapid population growth in the region.

San Antonio-based H-E-B entered the Metroplex market in 2022 with its first Frisco location and now operates 14 stores locally, with seven more planned. H-E-B also manages six Central Market locations and two Joe V’s Smart Shops, with another Joe V’s opening soon. The company has been expanding its land holdings by purchasing property such as 95 acres in Pilot Point and 20 acres in Sherman for future development.

Recently, Kroger experienced setbacks after a proposed $25 billion merger with Albertsons was blocked by a federal judge last December. Following this decision, Kroger closed 60 stores nationwide, including one location at 1707 West University Drive in McKinney.

Kroger has operated in the Metroplex since 1958 and currently runs about 100 stores across Dallas-Fort Worth. According to CoStar data, it ranks eighth among retail property owners within the region (https://www.costar.com).
