TCEQ approves over $1.9 million in fines for environmental violations

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has approved penalties totaling $1,751,893 against 22 regulated entities for violations of state environmental regulations. The enforcement actions include agreed orders in several categories: four air quality cases, two industrial wastewater discharge cases, two multi-media cases, eight municipal wastewater discharge cases, and five public water systems cases. Additionally, a default order was issued in one petroleum storage tank case.

On January 13, 2026, the executive director approved further penalties amounting to $157,838 against 49 entities.

The Texas Department of Environmental Quality is responsible for enforcing environmental regulations across Texas through its main office in Austin and 16 regional offices statewide. The agency oversees compliance in areas such as air emissions, water pollution control, waste management and petroleum storage oversight according to its official website. Formed in 1993 by merging previous agencies, it employs about 2,800 staff members who work to protect the state’s air, water and land resources while supporting sustainable development.
