The U.S. Census Bureau has released the 2023 Business Dynamics Statistics (BDS), providing updated information on business activity across the United States. The dataset includes annual measures such as job creation and destruction, establishment births and deaths, and firm startups and shutdowns. These statistics are presented for the overall economy as well as broken down by specific establishment and firm characteristics.

The BDS is an annual series that now covers data from 1978 through 2023. Users can access the latest figures on the official BDS website, through the Census API, or by using BDS Explorer, a tool that allows users to create tables, line charts, bar charts, and thematic maps to analyze trends in business dynamics.

According to the Census Bureau: “The data provide measures of business dynamics, such as job creation and destruction, establishment births and deaths, and firm startups and shutdowns for the economy overall and aggregated by establishment and firm characteristics.”

Additional information about how to use these tools is available at BDS and BDS Explorer.
